Brown pelican

Today is the exciting day we've been waiting for. It is release day for this juvenile brown pelican and volunteer Linda Bergman and Education Supervisor Dana Henderson couldn't be more excited. It is time for her to join others in the wild!

This girl was found on Atlantic Beach very sick and unable to fly. She was rushed to the shelter by two very compassionate people, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson of Morehead City. After a tough battle with an upper respiratory infection, she has overcome her sickness and regained her strength. She quickly made friends at the release site and is now wild again.

These are the days we live for!!!

Brown pelicans were once on the critically endangered species list due to the pesticide DDT. This pesticide leeched into the water and up the food chain to the pelicans via their main diet- fish. With the banning of DDT the brown pelican is once again a thriving species.

This is one example of how the chemicals and products we use can adversely affect wildlife, their habitat and our environment.
